In Nigeria, Soludo’s wife denies Obi is godfather to governor’s children — Premium Times Nigeria

Ngozi Soludo, the wife of Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo in Nigeria, has denied presidential candidate Peter Obi’s claim that he and his wife are godparents to the governor’s children. This was reported by Premium Times Nigeria.

Peter Obi’s statement

Obi, who represents the Nigerian Democratic Congress, made the statement on September 25 during the 22nd conference of the Nigerian Guild of Editors in Enugu. He said that he knows Soludo well and has no conflict with him. The statement came amid a public dispute between Obi and the Anambra State administration over debts that, according to state authorities, were incurred under previous administrations.

The Soludo family’s position

In a statement circulated on September 26 through Ngozi Soludo’s media aide, Dan Ezeigwe, the state’s first lady called Obi’s claim false. She stated that Peter Obi is not the godfather of any of Charles and Ngozi Soludo’s children and urged the public and media to take this clarification into account.

At the same time, Ngozi Soludo noted that she herself is godmother to Obi’s daughter at her confirmation, while the politician’s wife, Margaret Obi, is godmother to one of the Soludos’ daughters at her baptism. According to her, neither Peter Obi nor Charles Soludo were godfathers to each other’s children.

Dispute over state finances

Earlier, Anambra State Finance Commissioner Izuchukwu Okafor said that the Soludo administration continues to repay loans and other debts incurred during the terms of Obi and other former governors. In response, Obi claimed that he left the office of governor in 2014 with no debts and more than 75 billion naira in savings. The Anambra authorities published records of eight external loans totaling $123.7 million, of which, according to their data, $92.35 million remained outstanding. Obi also stated that he left the state more than $150 million in savings.
