Nigeria unveils 100-day tourism calendar

In Lagos, Nigeria, the digital platform MyCityApp and a 100-day tourism calendar were unveiled, intended to bring together festivals, concerts and other events from September to December. The launch took place at the Ember2Remember National Stakeholders’ Conference in the Victoria Island district with the support of the country’s federal government.

As Premium Times Nigeria reports, the initiative is intended to help create jobs, attract investment and develop Nigeria’s tourism and creative sectors. The organizers expect to use MyCityApp and MyLagosApp to share information about events among audiences in the country and the Nigerian diaspora.

A unified events calendar

Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy Hannatu Musa Musawa said the festive season can be deliberately organized and promoted to increase its contribution to the national economy. According to her, visitor travel creates demand in aviation, transport, the hotel business, restaurants, entertainment, retail, the technology sector, among artisans and local communities.

These include festivals, concerts, exhibitions, gastronomic and cultural events, fashion and sporting events, tourism programs and conferences.

A $100 billion ambition

MyCityApp CEO Ifeoma Chukwu described Nigeria’s cultural richness as an important economic opportunity. She said the country can develop a $100 billion tourism economy, citing tourism’s contribution to the economies of Spain, France and the United States in 2024.

The conference was attended by officials from tourism and cultural agencies in Lagos and Enugu states, heads of the National Council for Arts and Culture, the National Gallery of Art, the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria, as well as MTN Nigeria CEO Karl Toriola.
