Man detained in Nigeria on suspicion of killing girlfriend — Premium Times Nigeria
In Enugu State in southeastern Nigeria, police detained 30-year-old Chibuike Okpara on suspicion of killing his girlfriend, whom law enforcement identified only as Chinyere, and concealing her body in the bathroom of an apartment. This was reported by Premium Times Nigeria, citing state police spokesperson Daniel Ndukwe.
Suspect detained
According to police, the incident occurred in the Olympic Layout, One-Day Area of Enugu State. Preliminary investigation, Ndukwe said, indicates that the woman may have been killed on September 19. Her remains, police claim, were wrapped in plastic and locked in the bathroom of the residence.
Police said the smell from the body drew the attention of neighbors. According to police, they forced open the apartment door and detained the man until law enforcement arrived. Police officers, Ndukwe said, rescued the suspect from an angry crowd and re-arrested him at about 6:30 p.m. on September 21.

Police account and investigation
During preliminary questioning, Okpara, police claim, confessed to involvement in the woman's death. He also stated that the conflict with his girlfriend arose from mutual accusations over who infected whom with HIV. According to police, the suspect said that during the argument he struck the woman on the head with a pestle.
The victim's remains were taken to a morgue for storage and an autopsy. Law enforcement officers are trying to identify and notify her relatives. Enugu State Police Commissioner Bitrus Giwa instructed the state Criminal Investigation Department to establish the circumstances of the case and ensure the suspect is prosecuted after the investigation is completed.
