Nicosia promises immediate repairs to faulty pedestrian crossings

Charalambos Prountzos, the mayor of Nicosia in Cyprus, said that faults at pedestrian crossings with traffic lights in the city would be fixed immediately. The issue concerns pedestrian buttons whose presses did not affect the sequence of light signals.

The fault was identified by a contractor

Nicosia municipality’s technical team checked the problem, while an external maintenance contractor identified the fault, Cyprus Mail reports. According to the mayor, it is to be fixed immediately.

Prountzos also recalled the municipality’s Novoville mobile app, through which residents can report problems with urban infrastructure. The mayor urged people to use the platform to submit such reports and thanked those who inform the authorities about faults.

Problem crossings

Problems were recorded at least at three pedestrian crossings near busy Nicosia thoroughfares. These are the T-junction near Aluminium Tower connecting Limassol and Aglantzia avenues, the Apoel T-junction between Makarios and John F. Kennedy avenues, and the T-junction of Makarios Avenue and National Guard Street.

Pedestrians told the publication that because of the malfunctioning buttons, they had to either wait a long time until the road was clear enough to cross or cross busy streets as vehicles approached.
