South Korean PM links decline in youth employment to AI — Korea Herald
South Korean Prime Minister Han Seong-sook said that the decline in youth employment is linked to the spread of artificial intelligence technologies and companies’ preference for hiring experienced specialists instead of young workers without experience. She said this during a government question session at the National Assembly, Korea Herald reports.
Employers choose experienced candidates
Answering a question from People Power Party lawmaker Song Eon-seok, Han noted that changes in the environment due to the emergence of AI and the corporate practice of hiring specialists with experience are affecting graduates’ employment opportunities. According to her, under current conditions companies turn to experienced workers rather than creating jobs broadly.

Youth employment indicators
According to the Ministry of Data and Statistics, the employment rate among people aged 15 to 29 stood at 44.1% in August. This was one percentage point lower than a year earlier. The indicator has been declining for the 28th consecutive month, while the total number of employed young people has decreased year-on-year for the 46th consecutive month.
Han said that young people have insufficient opportunities to gain professional experience. According to her, the government is cooperating with major companies to create career development opportunities for them.
