In Germany, a 10% drop in the grain harvest is forecast due to the drought
The prolonged heat and drought have caused significant damage to German agriculture. This year’s grain harvest is expected to total about 40.6 million metric tons—approximately 10% less than last year.
Due to the loss of about 3 million metric tons of grain and rapeseed, Germany’s agricultural sector has already lost about 600 million euros in revenue.
At the same time, experts note that the harvest should be sufficient to meet the country’s domestic needs. A sharp rise in prices for bread and baked goods due to the smaller harvest is also not expected.
Low water levels in rivers remain an additional problem for farmers. Due to the drought, some of Germany’s inland waterways are currently only partially navigable.
