An 85-meter wind turbine blade fell onto a tractor-trailer in Germany

An accident occurred in Germany while a massive wind turbine blade was being transported. The 85-meter-long structure, weighing about 25 metric tons, fell onto the vehicle transporting it. The drivers were not injured, but the damage from the accident is estimated at several hundred thousand euros.

The accident occurred near the town of Badenweiler in the state of Baden-Württemberg. There, a special transport vehicle was carrying an 85-meter-long wind turbine blade weighing 25 metric tons. Special equipment was used to transport such a large load. The blade partially hung over the two towing vehicles—a truck and a tractor.

However, while in motion, the mechanisms holding the structure in place failed. As a result, the massive blade collapsed directly onto the vehicles. A hydraulic fluid leak also occurred during the accident. Despite the scale of the incident, the drivers were unharmed. There are no reports of other casualties either.

The accident caused significant property damage. According to preliminary estimates, the damage amounts to several hundred thousand euros. Experts are now tasked with determining the causes of the special equipment’s malfunction and the circumstances of the accident. Transporting such parts is a complex logistical operation due to their size and weight. Special tractor-trailers, fasteners, and mechanisms are used for this purpose, allowing for the transport of structures tens of meters long. This was reported by Spiegel.

In Germany, winemakers began harvesting grapes unusually early this year—as early as August. Due to the heat, the grapes ripened several weeks earlier than usual, but the drought could reduce the harvest by about 30% and make the wine itself stronger.
