In Germany, the SPD wants to reconsider banning the AfD

Leaders of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) have called for an official review of the issue of a possible ban on the right-wing populist party “Alternative for Germany” (AfD).

SPD representatives made this statement following a meeting in Bremen. In a joint declaration, they stated that they consider the AfD a threat to Germany’s democratic system and accused the party of spreading racist ideas and attempting to undermine democratic institutions.

The Social Democrats propose establishing a joint working group at the federal and state levels by the end of the year. The group is tasked with preparing a review of the issue regarding the possible initiation of proceedings to ban the party.

The SPD emphasized that, in their view, preparing such a procedure is a legal necessity to protect the constitutional order.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius also spoke about the importance of such a review. According to him, liberal democracies can be vulnerable to attempts to change their system from within.
