In Germany, yet another attempt is being made to rescue a whale that has become stranded
On Tuesday, authorities in Germany plan to make another attempt to rescue a humpback whale that has been stranded in shallow waters near the Baltic Sea coast for several weeks.
This was reported by dpa.
The fate of this 12-meter-long animal, nicknamed “Timmy” by the German media, has captivated the entire country since it first became stranded in early March. The whale has been lying in a shallow bay near the island of Poel for four weeks now.
After a series of failed attempts to rescue the animal, a private initiative backed by millionaires has taken on the task of organizing a new attempt to free the whale, despite concerns from environmental organizations and marine wildlife experts that this could cause the animal even greater pain.
The latest plan involves using straps to guide the whale, which weighs about 12 tons, through a dug-out channel to a transport barge that can tow it to the North Sea.
Til Bakhaus, the environment minister of the northeastern German state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, stated that the regional government has given the green light for the operation.
Veterinarians from a private initiative confirmed that the whale’s health allows for its transport, Backhaus added.

Also in the Baltic Sea, the dramatic rescue of a humpback whale that became trapped near the island of Niedenhof has come to an end.
