A court in Peshawar, Pakistan, sentenced Imtiaz to death for murdering his mother, Taj Bibi, in 2023. Dawn reports.
Sentence and compensation
Additional Sessions Judge Rafiullah said the prosecution had proved its case against Imtiaz. He was sentenced to death under Article 302(b) of the Pakistan Penal Code.
The court also ordered Imtiaz to pay 500,000 Pakistani rupees in compensation to the lawful heirs of the deceased. The death sentence case files were sent to the Peshawar High Court for confirmation under Article 364 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

According to his statement to police, Imtiaz came to the house with a friend, Tahir, and asked Taj Bibi for money. After she refused, Imtiaz, according to the complainant, stabbed his mother several times. When Tajur Rehman tried to stop the attack, Tahir, according to him, threatened him with a firearm. The woman died on the way to hospital.
Tahir's status
The court noted that the case materials contain evidence linking Tahir to the crime. Since he did not appear before the court and, according to the court's finding, deliberately evaded arrest and trial, he was declared a person absconding from justice, and it was ordered that his name be entered in the relevant register.
Senior public prosecutor Mohammad Sikandar Khan said that Tajur Rehman was an eyewitness to the murder and that the available materials link Imtiaz to the crime.
