Pakistan plants 1.36 million saplings for Defence Day
In Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, 1.36 million saplings of various species were planted as part of a campaign for Pakistan Defence Day. As Dawn reports, the forest department initially planned to plant one million plants, but exceeded this target with the support of other agencies and volunteers.
Work at 196 locations
Mohammad Junaid Dayar, director of the Billion Tree Afforestation Support Project, said planting was carried out at 196 locations in different parts of the province. The campaign was divided into planting by the department and the free distribution of saplings.
Forest department staff planted 813,881 plants at 29 sites. Local communities planted another 555,577 saplings at 167 locations. According to Dayar, a total of 96 tree-planting events were held across the province, aimed at restoring forests, expanding green cover and engaging communities.

Planting near Peshawar
During the campaign, the Peshawar Forest Division achieved its target of planting more than 50,000 saplings of various species in the Spinhak area. The work was coordinated by District Forest Officer Mohammad Shakeel and his deputy, Abdul Sattar.
Shakeel said the new plantations should help improve the environmental situation in Peshawar and surrounding areas by increasing green cover, helping reduce air pollution, moderating local temperatures and supporting ecological balance. According to him, Pakistan faces climate change, rising temperatures, air pollution, water shortages and the degradation of natural ecosystems.
Earlier, for Pakistan Independence Day, the department planted 1.73 million saplings with the participation of students, teachers and other population groups. Another 1.4 million plants were sown on March 23 to mark Pakistan Day.
