In Karachi, Pakistan, on September 8, a small fire broke out at the office of city mayor Murtaza Wahab on the first floor of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) building. An outdoor air conditioner unit caught fire, Dawn reports.

Fire brought under control

Deputy Inspector General of Police for the South district Asad Raza described the blaze as minor. According to Rescue 1122 spokesperson Hassanul Haseeb Khan, fire engines were dispatched to the scene, after which the fire was brought under control.

No one was injured in the incident. Only the outdoor air conditioner unit was damaged, the Rescue 1122 representative said.

Probable cause

Khan added that the fire was likely caused by a short circuit. The source presents this explanation as a preliminary version.

The previous day, on Monday, a major fire broke out at a factory in the Karachi Export Processing Zone near the Landhi industrial area. At least three people sustained minor injuries from smoke inhalation. The fire destroyed half of the three-storey building and severely damaged other businesses.

In January, a fire at the Gul Plaza shopping centre in Karachi claimed at least 73 lives and destroyed more than 1,100 shops. It was fully extinguished nearly two days later.
