South Korean lawmaker says US is pressuring for increased investment
The United States is pressuring South Korea to secure investments exceeding the previously agreed $350 billion under a bilateral tariff agreement. A South Korean lawmaker said this, citing a Ministry of Trade report, Korea Herald reports.
Investment package
At the end of 2025, Seoul committed to invest $350 billion in the United States in exchange for lower US reciprocal tariffs for South Korea. The package provides $200 billion for strategic industries and another $150 billion for the US shipbuilding industry.
Energy projects
According to the lawmaker, during the latest round of talks on the $200 billion package, the US side focused on three major energy infrastructure projects: a large gas facility in Texas, a nuclear reactor program, and the development of a gas pipeline in Alaska.

The lawmaker noted that the total amount of investment the United States is seeking for all three projects would exceed $200 billion. Negotiators are finalizing whether to invest in only two of the three projects or adjust the funding amounts for each of them.
South Korea's government is reportedly seeking to conclude negotiations with the United States, hold a closed briefing at the National Assembly next Thursday, and sign the agreement as early as next Friday.
