Pakistan to introduce mandatory fire safety training for medical interns
The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) will introduce mandatory fire safety training for medical interns at all medical and dental colleges in the country. The decision was made following an incident on August 26 at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) in Islamabad, in which 14 newborns died, Dawn reports.
Training to be included in internship program
PMDC President Professor Dr. Rizwan Taj said the mandatory fire safety program will be included in the internship curriculum. Its purpose is to raise fire awareness and preparedness, as well as protect doctors, patients, students and employees of medical institutions.
According to the council, the decision was made after reviewing existing fire safety protocols and identifying areas requiring improvement. Medical colleges and teaching hospitals must ensure strengthened fire safety measures and effective emergency preparedness to protect students, medical interns, patients and staff.

Regular evacuation drills
The program will provide for regular fire drills and evacuation exercises at medical colleges and teaching hospitals. Medical interns will be taught to identify fire hazards, use fire extinguishers, follow evacuation routes and effectively report emergencies.
Rizwan Taj also expressed his intention to extend the program in the future to medical students, postgraduate students and ultimately all healthcare workers. He stressed the need to improve the quality of hospital care for the most vulnerable people who depend on medical staff.
