Suspect in acid attack on woman in Karachi detained in Pakistan
In Karachi, Pakistan, a man suspected of carrying out an acid attack on a 35-year-old woman in the Upper Gizri area has been detained. According to Dawn, South District Deputy Inspector General of Police Syed Asad Raza said that the suspect was detained in Rajanpur, Punjab province.
The attack and the victim’s condition
According to police, the attack occurred on Thursday when the woman was returning home from work. She worked at one of the homes in the Clifton area. The victim was taken by an Edhi ambulance to the burn centre at Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital in Karachi.
Police surgeon Summaya Syed previously told Dawn that burns covered more than 15% of the woman’s body. Her face, neck and abdomen were affected.

Transfer of the suspect to Karachi
According to Raza, after the attack the suspect went to his native Rajanpur, where he was detained with the assistance of Sindh police. The official asked the additional inspector general of Karachi police to initiate obtaining permission from the Sindh Home Department to dispatch a police team to Rajanpur. It is to be sent to bring the detainee to Karachi.
Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar took notice of the incident and instructed police to use all available resources to detain the suspect as soon as possible and take legal action. In June, Pakistan’s Supreme Court called acid attacks worse than murder, stating that such crimes condemn victims to a “living death”.
