Enugu State Police report 6,240 arrests over 17 months

Police in Nigeria’s Enugu State said they detained 6,240 suspects over 17 months, seized 156 firearms and 1,486 rounds of various types of ammunition, and rescued 211 kidnapped people. This was reported by Premium Times Nigeria, citing a statement by police command spokesperson Daniel Ndukwe.

State Police Commissioner Mamman Giwa provided the figures during a working visit to the command of Assistant Inspector-General of Police for Zone 13, Miller Dantawaye. According to him, the statistics cover the period since March 11, 2025, when he assumed office as Enugu State Police Commissioner.

Categories of detainees

According to Giwa, those detained included 158 suspects in kidnappings, 186 in armed robberies, 188 in murders, and 57 in rapes. Another 273 people were detained in cases related to cult groups, while 63 were detained for illegal possession of firearms.

The remaining 5,315 people, police said, were detained for other offenses, including theft, unlawful entry into premises, and vandalism.

Weapons and transport

Of the 156 weapons seized, the commissioner said, 43 were AK-47 rifles and one was a G-3 assault rifle. During the operations, police also seized 209 vehicles, including cars, tricycles, and motorcycles.

Giwa attributed these results to intelligence-led operations, proactive policing, enhanced patrols along the state’s borders, and cooperation with neighboring states. Dantawaye called on command personnel to adhere to professional and ethical standards, discipline and accountability, and to respect citizens’ rights.
