Zamfara State governor appoints new Emir of Zurmi in Nigeria
Dauda Lawal, the governor of Zamfara State in Nigeria, has approved the appointment of Aminu Atiku as the new emir and Sarkin Zamfaran Zurmi of the Zurmi Emirate Council. As Premium Times Nigeria reports, the decision was made following consultations and a recommendation from the electors of the Emir of Zurmi, in accordance with the state’s traditions, customs and laws.
New Emir of Zurmi
Aminu Atiku became the 21st Sarkin Zamfaran Zurmi, succeeding Alhaji Bello Suleiman, who died on August 31, 2026. Atiku holds the traditional title of Dangaladiman Zurmi.
The new emir is the eldest son of the 19th Emir of Zurmi, the late Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. He previously served as the sole administrator of the Zurmi Local Government Council.

Call for peace
Dauda Lawal congratulated the new emir and urged him to continue the legacy of his predecessors by providing leadership based on peace, justice, unity and the welfare of residents.
The governor also called on Atiku to promote unity and peaceful coexistence among the emirate’s various communities and to cooperate with the government and security agencies to strengthen peace and security. According to Lawal, the Zurmi Emirate, founded several centuries ago by the Alibawa clan, holds an important place in the history of Zamfara State. He assured the new emir of the state government’s support.
