Finland has separated itself from Russia with a 200-kilometer fence
Finland has completed the construction of a 200-kilometer-long security fence along its border with Russia. The final work was completed near the Nuijamaa border crossing on Monday, September 7.
Finnish Interior Minister Mari Rantanen noted that the authorities will subsequently assess the need for further expansion of the fence, for which they are counting on financial support from the European Union for its eastern member states.
The official emphasized that a fence alone is not enough to ensure the security of the eastern borders; therefore, the Border Security Act plays a key role in preventing illegal entry, and it is proposed that its validity be extended for another two years. At present, Helsinki has no plans to open border crossing points to the east, as the security situation remains unchanged.
