Pakistan completes first arch bridge on alternative Karakoram Highway
In the Dasu area of Upper Kohistan, Pakistan, construction has been completed on the first arch bridge on an alternative 52-kilometer section of the Karakoram Highway. The structure was built by a Chinese company implementing the Dasu hydropower project, Dawn reports.
Bridge characteristics
The Doga concrete arch bridge is 78 meters long and 11.3 meters wide. It was built over the Doga watercourse on the alternative section of the Karakoram Highway. The bridge has a 10-meter carriageway and shoulders.
Wapda called the completion of construction an important milestone, as the current section of the highway is to be flooded by the reservoir of the Dasu hydropower project in the future. According to the agency, the bridge is a key part of the relocated section of the Karakoram Highway.

Alternative route
The new road section is being built at a higher elevation to replace the current route, which will be underwater after the Dasu reservoir is created. Wapda stated that the bridge is intended to ensure safe and uninterrupted road connectivity in the area.
Several arch bridges and tunnels are also being built on the alternative route. As Wapda noted, these facilities are intended to support uninterrupted traffic flow even during floods.
