Daily Maverick publishes subscriber photo selection in South Africa for September 12–18

In South Africa, Daily Maverick published a weekly selection of photographs by subscribers to the First Thing newsletter for the period from September 12 to 18, 2026. It includes images of sunrises, zebras, a farmhouse, a thunderstorm and microscopic salt crystals.

Photographs in the selection

Among the published works are Tim Elliott's “Dawn patrol,” David John Thomson's photograph of zebras, Gerhard Endres's “Going for gold,” and Emil Gründling's “Postcard farmhouse.” Johnny Velloza submitted a photograph of sunrise over Italy, taken from an altitude of 41,000 feet.

The gallery also includes works by Leslie de Ruyck, Ntokozo Thembela and Kevin Farr. Derek Goldman presented a view of a thunderstorm over Muizenberg and Kalk Bay, visible from Simon's Town.

Salt crystals under magnification

Tiaan Olivier presented an image of salt crystals that formed as diluted tamari soy sauce dried. The photograph was magnified four times. The description states that salt does not produce birefringence colors under crossed polarized light, while oblique illumination helps reveal delicate crystalline formations.

Daily Maverick said it limits its weekly selections to a maximum of 20 photographs. Authors retain all rights to their work, and submitting a photograph means granting permission for it to be published on the website in this format.
