During Putin's visit to Beijing, an orchestra performed Tchaikovsky's "Dance of the Little Swans"

During Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s official visit to Beijing, a Chinese military band performed an excerpt from Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s ballet *Swan Lake*the “Dance of the Little Swans.”

The ballet “Swan Lake” has a dual symbolic meaning in Russia. On the one hand, it is one of the most famous works of classical music and a cultural symbol of which the Russian Federation is traditionally proud. On the other hand, in the political culture of the post-Soviet space, it is associated with periods of crisis and changes in power.

During the Soviet era, state television often used ballet broadcasts as “neutral” filler during emergencies when the authorities restricted information.

That is precisely why the appearance of this music on the air was perceived as a signal of serious political changes.

In particular, following the deaths of Soviet leaders and during the August 1991 coup, “Swan Lake” was broadcast continuously on television, which subsequently cemented the work’s status as a symbol of political instability and changing eras.

Following U.S. President Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin arrived in China for a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping

During his visit to China, Vladimir Putin had hoped to secure Beijing’s approval for the construction of a new large-scale gas pipeline, but the negotiations ended without a result.
