Mother and three-year-old son die on Jindo Beach in South Korea

In Jindo County, South Jeolla Province, South Korea, a mother in her 40s and her three-year-old son died after waves carried them away from the shore. The woman’s two other children survived.

Attempt to rescue the children

As The Korea Herald reports, the incident occurred on Saturday at around 1:51 p.m. near the Jindo Mysterious Sea Road tourist site. During low tide, the sea reveals a path to an island offshore before submerging it again. At the time of the incident, the water was receding after high tide, which peaked at 11:41 a.m.

The woman was watching the children from the shore. None of them was wearing a life jacket. When the children began to be carried farther away from the beach, she entered the water in an attempt to help them.

Two children were rescued

The six-year-old daughter managed to get out of the water on her own and call for help. Her eight-year-old brother was rescued after holding on to ropes near a nearby fish farm.

The woman and her youngest son were taken to hospital in cardiac arrest, where medical staff pronounced them dead. Investigators are reviewing footage from nearby surveillance cameras to establish the exact circumstances of the incident. According to officials, this section of the coast is not intended for swimming, although tourists often enter the water there.
