Beach bookstore on a tricycle becomes popular on social media in South Korea

In the city of Sokcho in South Korea, Three Feet Bookstore has gained popularity. It is set up on a blue three-wheeled vehicle with a pink cabinet shelf for books. The bookstore operates by the sea in Gangwon Province, and visitors who buy a book can borrow a beach chair for free, Korea Herald reports.

Reading on the coast

Visitors can sit on the beach with books without any time limit. One customer, Moon Seo-yeon, said she had already visited the bookstore for the sixth time this year. She first visited it in July and traveled there from Seoul every week.

According to Moon, she likes the relaxed atmosphere: people can discuss what they have read on the beach, drink wine, and relax by the sea. The bookstore’s owner, Park Yeong-a, noted that the unusual vehicle initially attracts people, but they return for the experience of reading on the coast.

Another visitor, Kim Seul-gi, spent about an hour on August 26 reading Patrick Süskind’s “Three Stories and a Reflection” on the beach. She said that reading by the sea makes it possible to combine books with being in nature.

Viral popularity

Park Yeong-a deliberately allows and encourages visitors to photograph the bookstore. According to her, this is intended to attract not only people already interested in books and independent bookstores, but also those who do not usually read.

After posts about Three Feet Bookstore went viral, the owner noticed more foreign visitors and added a selection of books in English. These include Min Jin Lee’s “Pachinko” and Kim Yoon-hee’s “Rattaila.” An Austrian couple vacationing in the region noticed the blue tricycle while walking along the coast and noted the English-language editions.

On August 29, the bookstore was also featured on the Instagram of Dua Lipa’s book club. Park Yeong-a said that she mainly selects lighter books for leisure and does not give ready-made recommendations, as she considers it important to search for a book independently on the shelves.
