South Korean President Lee Jae Myung's approval rating rises to 37.9% — Korea Herald

In South Korea, the approval rating of President Lee Jae Myung's performance rose for the second consecutive week, reaching 37.9%. The positive assessment of his performance increased by 3.1 percentage points over the week.

As Korea Herald reports, the survey was conducted by Realmeter among 1,508 adult respondents nationwide from Monday through Wednesday last week. The share of negative assessments of the president's performance fell by 3.3 percentage points to 60.1%.

Before that, Lee Jae Myung's rating had been declining for ten weeks, before beginning to rise in the previous survey. Realmeter linked the change in dynamics to the president's September 18 press conference, during which he explained key policy issues. According to the company, his communication during the press conference and overseas diplomatic activity at the UN General Assembly and the South Korea-US summit may also have affected the figure.

Party ratings

In a separate survey of 1,005 adults conducted on Tuesday and Wednesday, support for the main opposition People Power Party surpassed support for the ruling Democratic Party for the first time in two weeks. The People Power Party received 39.4%, while the Democratic Party received 38.7%.

Realmetre assessed that the People Power Party strengthened its support by emphasizing shortcomings in the government's system for vetting candidates for positions after the withdrawal of two ministerial nominations. The margin of error was 2.5 percentage points for the presidential survey and 3.1 percentage points for the party survey, at a 95% confidence level. Both studies were commissioned by the EKN newspaper.
