In Poland, a lawmaker was punished for anti-Ukrainian remarks
The Polish Sejm’s Ethics Committee imposed sanctions on Przemysław Czerniec, a Law and Justice Party lawmaker, for his anti-Ukrainian statements. The decision was made after reviewing the politician’s remarks, which were deemed to violate standards of conduct for members of parliament.
This relates to a controversy that arose on June 9, specifically regarding Czarnik’s remarks about Deputy Minister of Science Andrzej Sheptytsky.
The Law and Justice MP accused the government of harboring “Ukrainians who insult Poles” within its ranks.
Czarnek’s comment was in response to Sheptytsky’s remarks regarding the UPA’s place in Ukrainian historical memory. Sheptytsky stated that the UPA was an organization that fought for Ukraine’s independence and that its members were “sort of like those indomitable Ukrainian soldiers.”
At the same time, he noted that a clear assessment of the Volhynia tragedy remains a separate issue.
“You’d have to be an exceptional hypocrite to call someone a parasite while at the same time supporting a government that claims the OUN-UPA perpetrators of genocide are ‘supposedly unyielding warriors.’ You are parasites; you are traitors to the Polish people and to the interests of the Polish people. It was right here, 1.5 years ago, that we discussed the law banning Banderaism and the law on the Volhynia lie, which provides for punishment in the form of imprisonment for up to 3 years for people like Mr. Sheptytsky,” said Charneck.
On Wednesday, July 29, the Sejm’s Committee on Parliamentary Ethics issued a ruling regarding Charneck’s remarks.
The committee decided to issue a reprimand to the lawmaker—the most severe penalty provided for in the rules of procedure.
Amid the scandal over the naming of one of Ukraine’s defense force units in honor of UPA fighters, Andrzej Sheptytsky explained that in Ukraine they are viewed the same way as in Poland—as Polish anti-Soviet underground fighters. Following this, politicians with more right-wing views began demanding Sheptytsky’s dismissal and even the resignation of Tusk’s government.
