Hungary May Shut Down Its Only Nuclear Power Plant Due to the Shallow Water Levels of the Danube
Hungary is preparing to shut down all four power units at the Paks Nuclear Power Plant due to record-low water levels in the Danube. According to the energy company MVM, this could happen within the next 24–72 hours.
The company explained that there is enough water to cool the reactors, but the river level has dropped below the intake pipes necessary for the system to operate. Currently, the Danube’s water level is 28 centimeters lower than the previous record low set in 2018.
The Paks Nuclear Power Plant is Hungary’s only nuclear power plant and accounts for nearly half of the country’s electricity production. In light of the situation, authorities have urged citizens to conserve electricity.

Hungary has officially established the National Asset Recovery Agency, which will be responsible for tracking down and recovering state funds that were illegally misappropriated in previous years. The new agency is one of the key anti-corruption reforms of Prime Minister Péter Magyar’s government following his victory in the parliamentary elections.
