The Romanian government convened an emergency meeting due to a threat to the safe operation of the Cernavodă nuclear power plant, which arose amid extreme heat and a critical drop in water levels in the Danube.
The Cabinet of Ministers considered declaring a state of emergency in the counties of Constanța and Călărași, as well as measures to maintain sufficient water levels near the nuclear power plant.
Low water levels in the Danube could hinder effective reactor cooling, but authorities are striving to avoid shutting down the plant due to a sharp increase in electricity consumption.
The day before, Acting Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan called on the public and businesses to reduce electricity consumption, especially during evening peak hours. In the coming days, air temperatures in some regions of the country could reach +40°C.
