A legendary catfish has disappeared from a city lake in Poland
In Warsaw, police detained a 57-year-old Ukrainian citizen suspected of catching the famous catfish from Lake Balaton. The fish had lived there for about twenty years and had long since become a local legend. Now law enforcement officials are investigating not only the fact of the catch itself, but also possible cruelty to the animal.
The story, which has been widely discussed in Poland for several days, began with a routine fishing trip and ended with a police investigation. A 57-year-old Ukrainian man was detained in Warsaw on suspicion of catching a large catfish from Lake Balaton. To most people, it might have been just an ordinary fish. But to the residents of the area, it was a true local celebrity.
According to local residents, the catfish had lived in the lake for nearly two decades. It was well known to fishermen, who often spotted the giant while fishing. Moreover, many people deliberately released the fish back into the water even after it had been hooked. That is why the news of its disappearance quickly sparked a wave of outrage on social media.
According to Polish media reports, the incident occurred on May 30. Witnesses reported seeing two men on Lake Balaton. One of them was fishing with a rod. Eventually, they managed to pull a huge catfish, 183 centimeters long, out of the water.
When bystanders realized what the fishermen had caught, they began to make comments and ask them to release the fish back into the water. However, according to witnesses, the men did not respond to the requests. According to eyewitnesses, the catfish was then placed in the trunk of a car, and they drove away.
It was these reports that later began to spread widely on social media. For many residents of Warsaw, this catfish has long been part of local history. It was called the legend of Lake Balaton. Fishermen had known about it for years, photographed it, told newcomers about it, and even showed it to children.
Due to its age and size, the fish had effectively become a local landmark. That is why the story resonated so strongly far beyond the district. On social media, many users wrote that catching such a catfish is perceived not simply as fishing, but as the loss of a piece of local history.
After verifying the information, law enforcement officials reported the arrest of a man who may be involved in this incident. He turned out to be a 57-year-old Ukrainian citizen. An investigation into all the circumstances is currently underway.
The police drew attention to another important point. Under Polish regulations, catfish fishing was prohibited through May 31. In other words, if the fish was indeed caught on May 30, it could have occurred during the closed season. The police stated: “We can assume that this man caught this fish during the closed season, when the catfish was protected and its catch was prohibited.”
Law enforcement is also investigating information regarding the transportation of the fish. “We also suspect that this may constitute animal cruelty, as the fish was transported without access to water,” the police reported.
No official charges have been filed yet. Law enforcement is gathering witness statements and analyzing videos and reports that emerged after the incident. The police emphasize that it is too early to discuss possible penalties. However, the case has already received widespread attention in Poland.
For many Warsaw residents, this is not just about a violation of fishing regulations. People are discussing the loss of a fish that for many years has been a symbol of Lake Balaton and a true legend among local fishermen. Now, the investigation must provide a definitive answer to the question of what exactly happened to the famous catfish and who is responsible for it.
