Finlay Tarling, a 19-year-old British cyclist, died in Portugal

British cyclist Finlay Tarling died at the age of 19 during the eighth stage of the Tour of Portugal. The athlete’s death was reported by the race organizers and his team, the NSN Development Team, according to France 24.

According to the organizers, Tarling was involved in a “serious accident” during the stage between Melgaço and Fafe. Following the incident, the stage was suspended approximately 20 kilometers from the finish line, and the awards ceremony was canceled “as a sign of respect and mourning.”

The Portuguese television channel RTP, which was broadcasting the race, reported that the cyclist collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle that was not associated with the race.

The NSN Development Team confirmed the athlete’s death and expressed its condolences to his parents and his brother Josh, who rides for the Netcompany-Ineos team. In a statement, the team described Tarlings as a beloved member of the team, a son, a brother, and a friend. Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro also expressed his condolences to the family and the team.

The NSN Development Team is co-owned by former Barcelona soccer player Andrés Iniesta.
