In Russia, a Muslim leader has once again been fined over a painting in his office
Damir Mukhetdinov, deputy chairman of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Russia, has once again been fined by a Moscow court. This time, he was ordered to pay 20,000 rubles under a charge of allegedly inciting hostility.
The basis for the administrative case was two paintings found in Mukhetdinov’s office—“The Capture of Vasily the Dark near Suzdal” and “The Banquet on the Kalka.” Photographs of the paintings were published on the official website of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of the Russian Federation following the mufti’s meeting with Muslims from Donetsk.
In early June, Mukhetdinov had already been fined 150,000 rubles under a provision regarding alleged desecration of religious objects. The reason was the very same painting depicting the Battle of the Kalka River between Mongol and Rus’ forces, which took place in 1223.
