In Romania, a man launched a "fundraiser" on social media to kill the president
In Romania, police have launched an investigation following the appearance of a social media post in which a man claimed to be raising funds to assassinate President Nicușor Dan.
This was reported by Digi24.
According to the outlet, in the post, the man claimed he was organizing a fundraiser for an assassination attempt on the head of state, adding that “every leu counts.” In the comments under the post, some users even asked for bank details to transfer funds.
Law enforcement officials in Timiș County stated that they opened the case on their own initiative.
“In light of the images that appeared in the public domain on social media, where a young man posted that he was organizing a fundraiser to kill a public figure, we report that Timis County police have launched an investigation on their own initiative and are conducting checks to establish the facts and take the necessary legal measures,” the police stated.
Law enforcement officials are currently verifying the authenticity of the account and the circumstances of the post to determine whether this constitutes a real threat.
Efforts are also underway to locate the author of the post for subsequent prosecution in accordance with the law.
Recently, Romanian President Nicușor Dan appointed seven prosecutors and their deputies, despite criticism from civil society organizations and journalists.
As a reminder, earlier, the leader of Romania’s far-right, Gheorghe Simion, topped the trust rating for politicians in Romania. He surpassed both the current prime minister and the country’s president in terms of support, demonstrating a significant lead in public sentiment.
