School reopens in Syria’s Idlib after 60 years of closure — Anadolu Agency
Holy Land School in the Jisr al-Shughur area of Syria’s Idlib province has resumed operations after being closed for nearly 60 years. This was stated by Minister of Emergency Situations and Disaster Management Raed al-Saleh.
School reopening
According to al-Saleh, the school was closed by the Baath Party and the regime of Bashar al-Assad. The official said he took part in its reopening and called the event part of “the Syria we dreamed of — a Syria for all its people.”
The minister did not specify when the decision to close the institution was made or under what circumstances it happened. He also provided no information about the grades that will operate at the school or the expected number of students.

As Anadolu Agency reports, the school building was damaged by shelling during the years of the Syrian revolution. Mass protests in the country began in 2011, and the Assad regime fell in December 2024.
Restoration of educational infrastructure
The school’s reopening is part of efforts to restore educational infrastructure in Idlib, where several institutions have recently resumed operations. In June, 50 schools reopened after repairs in the city of Kafr Nabl with the support of the “Loyalty to Idlib” campaign. Raed al-Saleh and Idlib Governor Mohammad Abdulrahman took part in the ceremony.
