US restricts travel by government employees to Taif and Yanbu — Anadolu Agency

The US Department of State has restricted travel by American government employees working in Saudi Arabia to the cities of Taif and Yanbu. Special authorization is now required for any official or personal travel to these cities.

Restrictions for US employees

A warning from the US mission in Saudi Arabia said that the decision was made due to the current security situation in the country. Anadolu Agency reports on the introduction of the restrictions.

The mission also strongly advised US citizens to remain vigilant, keep their mobile phones charged, and avoid demonstrations and areas with a significant police presence. Americans were advised not to draw attention to themselves, particularly near US-related facilities.

Recommendations in the event of an air attack

In the event of an air attack, US citizens are advised to immediately seek shelter away from windows and doors. The notice stated that routine and emergency consular assistance continues to operate throughout the kingdom.

Regional escalation

The restrictions were imposed amid a military escalation between Saudi Arabia and Yemen's Houthis. The day before, Washington urged Americans outside the Middle East to reconsider plans to travel to or transit through the region due to the risk of rapid escalation.
