NDC Chairman Asiedu Nketiah calls Nkrumah a key figure for Ghana — MyJoyOnline
In Ghana, the national chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, stated that Kwame Nkrumah played a unique role in shaping the modern Ghanaian state. Speaking at the presentation of Nkrumah Fest, he said that no other politician or nationalist could match Nkrumah’s contribution to the creation of the country.
As MyJoyOnline reports, Asiedu Nketiah stressed that the struggle for independence before Nkrumah’s emergence was largely concentrated in the Gold Coast colony. According to him, the colony included the territories of today’s Western, Central, Eastern regions and Greater Accra, as well as part of the territory of the present-day Volta Region.
Unification of territories
The NDC chairman stated that the Ashanti Kingdom was outside the Gold Coast colony and was not directly covered by the activities of the early independence fighters. He also described the Northern Territories and Trans-Volta Togoland as separate political entities that were to become part of the new state.

According to Asiedu Nketiah, Trans-Volta Togoland came under British administration after the division of the former German colony of Togo at the end of World War I. He maintains that Nkrumah’s role was not limited to securing the independence of the Gold Coast, but included uniting different territories within modern Ghana.
Assessment of Nkrumah’s legacy
Asiedu Nketiah criticized attempts to downplay Nkrumah’s contribution to the country’s history. He also said that his personal attitude toward the politician’s legacy was shaped by the opportunity to receive an education through educational programs introduced during the Nkrumah era.
The politician positively assessed the establishment of Nkrumah Fest by Ellembelle Member of Parliament Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah. In his view, the initiative gives Ghanaians an opportunity to reflect on Nkrumah’s contribution and counter, as he put it, attempts to tarnish his name and legacy.
