In the U.S., Democrats won Trump's home district in Florida

Representatives of the U.S. Democratic Party secured two victories in the elections to the Florida State Legislature, which is traditionally considered a Republican stronghold.

This was reported by Politico.

Specifically, Democrat Emily Gregory defeated the Republican candidate for the state House of Representatives in the district where Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence is located. Her opponent was John Maples, who was publicly supported by Trump.

In addition, Democrats narrowly won the state Senate election in Tampa—a region where Republican Jay Collins served as lieutenant governor until August 2025.

Gregory, who was running for office for the first time, has experience in healthcare and mental health management and currently runs a fitness center for postpartum women.

Her victory came despite Trump’s active campaigning on social media in favor of her opponent. It continues a string of Democratic successes in special elections in Florida following Trump’s decisive victory in the state in the 2024 election.

As a reminder, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to send Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to airports if Democrats do not end the government shutdown. According to him, this is intended to ensure security at airports and put an end to the chaos caused by the shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security.
