Ukraine and the IAEA are preparing a memorandum on the restoration of energy infrastructure

Ukraine and the International Atomic Energy Agency are drafting a document on cooperation in post-war reconstruction and the development of the nuclear energy sector. The project provides for technical support for the construction of new nuclear power plants, the introduction of small modular reactors, and the modernization of equipment.

This was reported by the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate.

During a meeting in Vienna, the agency’s head, Oleg Korikov, and IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi discussed engaging international suppliers and the work of safety assessment missions. A separate focus will be on restoring power grids and strengthening emergency preparedness systems. The document is intended to expand cooperation between the parties to stabilize the energy sector amid challenges caused by Russia’s aggression. The cooperation will also cover improving the operational safety of existing facilities. Previously, the Ukrainian side called on the IAEA to take more decisive steps to exclude Russia from the agency’s Board of Governors.

The memorandum is expected to lay the foundation for long-term investments in the industry. The implementation of reconstruction plans will take into account modern radiation safety standards. Meanwhile, monitoring of the situation at the occupied energy facilities continues.
