HIMARS Trained to Shoot Down Iskanders and Kinzhals: U.S. Unveils New Air Defense System
The American company Lockheed Martin has unveiled an upgraded version of the HIMARS rocket system, called HIMARS FLEX, which features enhanced air and missile defense capabilities.
The main feature of the new version is an increased ammunition capacity—the system can carry two ammunition containers at once instead of one. This allows it to launch up to 12 GMLRS guided missiles simultaneously.
In addition to striking ground targets, the HIMARS FLEX is now capable of firing PAC-3 anti-aircraft missiles from Patriot systems.
As a result, the system will be able to intercept Iskander-type ballistic missiles and Kinzhal aeroballistic missiles.
The developers state that the system can employ two main weapon configurations: 12 GMLRS missiles for striking ground targets or up to 8 air defense missiles to counter aerial threats.
Lockheed Martin emphasizes that the combination of mobility, increased ammunition capacity, and new air defense capabilities enhances the system’s survivability on the battlefield and makes it more difficult for the enemy to destroy.
