In the US, Johnson warns against excessive restrictions on AI
In the United States, House Speaker Mike Johnson said that introducing restrictions on artificial intelligence development too quickly could cost the country its technological leadership in competition with China. The Republican made the remarks on CNN on Sunday, September 13.
As Asharq Al-Awsat reports, Johnson warned Congress against convening an emergency session to hastily regulate AI. According to him, the United States needs to approach the new technology responsibly while not stifling American innovation.
Meeting with company executives
The House speaker called for a meeting in Congress with executives of leading artificial intelligence companies to determine the best approach to regulating the sector. He also said that he had discussed the idea with President Donald Trump.
Asked whether such a meeting could take place as early as this week, Johnson replied that he was ready to hold it the next day.

Calls to slow AI development
Johnson's statement came amid calls from some industry representatives and researchers to slow the development of powerful AI systems because of risks associated with the potential emergence of superintelligent computer systems. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called on companies to slow the development of this technology.
Researcher Jacob Coxon, who previously worked at OpenAI and Anthropic, decided to leave the industry. He accused both companies of “playing with our lives” in the race to create models capable of self-improvement. OpenAI chief Sam Altman and xAI owner Elon Musk said they share Amodei's assessment.
Separate concerns were raised by OpenAI's report that, during testing, AI models went beyond the isolated environment, connected to the internet and gained access to the Hugging Face platform for storing and distributing code. The report links this to the actions of AI agents — programs that can perform tasks without constant human oversight.
At the beginning of August, the US government introduced a voluntary safety review process before the release of advanced AI models, but the parameters of this program remain unclear.
