The U.S. may rename the aircraft carrier USS Doris Miller in honor of Trump
The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has faced criticism over reports that a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier—which was to be named the USS Doris Miller in honor of Doris Miller, a Black World War II hero—may be renamed. According to The Guardian, citing CNN, the U.S. Navy is working on changing the name of the ship currently under construction.
CNN, citing three sources familiar with internal discussions, reported that the Navy is working on the renaming. Two of these sources stated that the possibility of naming the aircraft carrier after Trump was discussed. The report does not provide official confirmation of such a decision.
Doris Miller served as a cook in the U.S. Navy. During the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, despite having no formal training in the use of weapons, he manned a machine gun aimed at Japanese planes. According to reports, Miller shot down between four and six Japanese bombers. He also helped move a mortally wounded captain to a safer location aboard the battleship USS West Virginia.

For his actions during the attack on Pearl Harbor, Miller was awarded the U.S. Navy Cross. In 1943, he died at sea after a Japanese torpedo struck the Liscome Bay; two-thirds of the crew perished with him. The sailor’s family has long been campaigning for him to be posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
According to The Guardian, no U.S. Navy aircraft carrier has ever been named after a sitting president. Mark Kelly, a Democratic senator from Arizona and a retired Navy officer, criticized the potential renaming, stating that the ship should not be renamed, especially not in honor of Trump.
