In the US, Newsom will not run in 2028 if Harris enters the race
In the United States, California Governor Gavin Newsom said he will not run in the 2028 presidential election if former Vice President Kamala Harris decides to seek the nomination. He said this in an upcoming CNN interview, The Guardian reports.
Newsom’s position
According to Newsom, competing against Harris in the Democratic Party primaries would be a waste of voters’ time and a “gift from God” to their political opponents. “I wouldn’t do that with her. I wouldn’t waste everyone’s time,” he told CNN host Jake Tapper.
The governor also said that he had considered running in the 2024 presidential election, but at that time, according to him, he was not ready. Newsom added that he is still assessing whether he will be ready for the next presidential primaries. “You have to meet the moment,” he said.

Possible Democratic contenders
Newsom and Harris are both from California and are considered among the leading potential Democratic Party candidates in future presidential primaries. Newsom is completing his last legally permitted term as governor of California this year and has recently positioned himself more actively as an opponent of Donald Trump.
After losing to Trump in the 2024 presidential election, Harris has commented publicly less often on her political plans. In July, she said she had not yet made a decision on possible participation in the next US presidential election.
Newsom made the comments to Tapper while fly-fishing on the Bitterroot River in Montana, where his wife’s relatives own ranches.
