Discussions are underway in the U.S. regarding cuts to intelligence agencies

U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he does not object to downsizing the U.S. National Intelligence Community, considering it to have been overly bloated for many years. At the same time, he expressed support for the agency’s new director, Bill Pulte, and effectively gave him carte blanche to implement potential reforms within the organization.

Trump told reporters this aboard Air Force One while commenting on upcoming personnel and organizational changes within the U.S. intelligence community.

The U.S. president made it clear that he supports the idea of streamlining the National Intelligence structure if the new leadership deems it necessary. “If he makes cuts, I wouldn’t be opposed to that. He’ll do a great job with this. He’ll keep a close eye on it, but Bill Pulte is a very good professional; he’s very talented,” Trump said.

According to him, the number of U.S. intelligence personnel has been excessive “for too long,” and the time has come to review the agency’s effectiveness.

Trump also announced that Bill Pulte will remain acting Director of National Intelligence until a permanent director is appointed. According to the president, five candidates are currently being considered for the position. “These are highly respected individuals,” he commented briefly, without revealing any names.

U.S. National Intelligence is one of the key agencies in the national security system, coordinating the work of several of the country’s intelligence agencies. Questions regarding its effectiveness and scope have repeatedly been the subject of political debate in Washington; however, any personnel or structural changes in this area are typically accompanied by serious debate due to the sensitivity of the information and the role of intelligence in U.S. foreign policy.

No official decisions on staff reductions have been made yet, but Trump’s statement effectively opens the discussion on a possible reform of the agency.

U.S. President Donald Trump’s special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner held a closed-door meeting with leading American nuclear experts, during which they discussed the prospects for negotiations with Iran and a possible new nuclear deal.

Donald Trump criticized the U.S. House of Representatives’ decision to vote to limit his military authority on matters related to Iran.

U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he does not rule out a personal meeting with Iran’s new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, who has become one of the country’s key figures following the change in leadership.
