James Copenhaver, wounded in Trump assassination attempt, dies in US — ABC News Australia

James Copenhaver, who was wounded during the assassination attempt on Donald Trump at a 2024 campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, has died in the United States at the age of 76. As ABC News reports, the man died on Wednesday at West Penn Hospital, part of the Allegheny Health Network, in Pittsburgh.

Injuries at the rally

Copenhaver was sitting in the stands during the event when a 20-year-old shooter opened fire from the roof of a nearby building. One of the bullets grazed Trump’s right ear. Copenhaver sustained injuries to his arm and abdomen, after which he had long-term health problems and used a cane.

According to local media, citing a statement by the Allegheny County medical examiner, Copenhaver died in hospital. His lawyer, Joseph Feldman, said on behalf of the family that the man died surrounded by loved ones. The statement did not specify whether the death was directly related to the injuries sustained at the rally.

Family lawsuit

In June, James Copenhaver and his wife Marianne filed a lawsuit against the U.S. federal government. They alleged that the Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security failed to provide adequate security at the rally.

Copenhaver’s injuries required several surgeries, including an operation on his colon. The lawsuit also cited kidney damage, other long-term effects and a loss of sensation in his leg. David Dutch, who survived, and Corey Comperatore, who was killed while shielding his family from gunfire, were also wounded in the shooting.
