US to commemorate 25th anniversary of September 11 attacks — Euronews
Ceremonies marking the 25th anniversary of the 2001 attacks, when hijacked planes crashed into sites in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania, are scheduled in the United States on September 11. According to Euronews, relatives of those killed will gather at the memorial plaza in New York, where the names of the victims will be read aloud. Ceremonies will also be held near the Pentagon in Arlington and at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville.
Seven moments of silence
Seven moments of silence are planned during the event in New York — one more than in previous years. The additional moment will be dedicated to people who died from illnesses related to the consequences of the September 11 attacks.
President Donald Trump will speak at the Pentagon this year, while Vice President J.D. Vance will visit Ground Zero. Former presidents Joe Biden, Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush are also expected at the ceremony in New York.
According to a new Ipsos poll, about half of adult Americans name September 11, without prompting, as one of the most important events of their lives. Nine out of ten respondents believe that the attacks significantly or somewhat changed the country. At the same time, about one in ten respondents plans to actively mark the anniversary; the most common gestures are observing a minute of silence and flying a flag.

Victims and trial
A total of 2,977 people were killed in the attacks. The victims included about 372 foreign nationals from around 60 countries. Among countries other than the United States, the United Kingdom lost the most citizens — 67 people. Ukraine also lost one person. The financial firm Cantor Fitzgerald suffered the greatest losses among individual companies: 658 of its employees were killed that day.
All 19 plane hijackers died during the attacks. The terrorist network Al-Qaeda claimed direct responsibility for the attacks. Its leader Osama bin Laden was killed by US special forces in Pakistan in 2011, and his successor Ayman al-Zawahiri was killed in a drone strike in Kabul in 2022.
Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, whom Euronews describes as a man who called himself the organizer of the plot, was detained in Pakistan in 2003. He has been held at Guantanamo Bay since 2006 and was charged with the first-degree murder of 2,977 people. A US military judge scheduled the start of his trial and that of several alleged accomplices for June 2028. The proceedings have been delayed for more than two decades, including because of disputes over evidence obtained at secret CIA sites through the use of torture, including simulated drowning.
