Tallinn practices evacuation of museum valuables — ERR News
Large-scale Ars Longa crisis exercises are taking place in Tallinn, Estonia, this week, during which the Art Museum of Estonia and the Heritage Board are practicing the evacuation of the country’s most valuable museum objects. This was reported by ERR News.
Preparing for crises
Crisis expert Linda Lainvoo noted that the most difficult scenario is war. At the same time, the need to quickly relocate museum objects may also arise due to other major or minor incidents.
The collection of the Niguliste Museum in Tallinn was already evacuated in 1943, during World War II. Museum director Merike Kurisoo said that this experience confirmed the possibility of moving a significant number of objects at the same time.

Models for exercises
To avoid putting genuine works of art at risk, models of exhibits from the Niguliste Museum were created for the exercises. They have the same weight as the originals and can be folded in the same way if necessary.
According to Lainvoo, rare and important museum objects require particularly careful handling, which makes field exercises complex and costly. In the event of an emergency at Niguliste, the plan is to evacuate older works first, followed by newer ones. The location to which the collection would be evacuated in a crisis has not been disclosed.
