In Thailand, Modi and Yunus discussed Hasina and minority security — The Hindu International

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus held their first talks since the change of power in Dhaka on April 4, 2025, in Bangkok, Thailand. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the sixth BIMSTEC summit and lasted about 40 minutes. As The Hindu International reports, the sides discussed the protection of minorities in Bangladesh, border security and Dhaka’s request for the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Minority security

According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, Modi expressed concern over the security of minorities, particularly Hindus, who became targets of attacks after Hasina left Dhaka amid protests in August 2024. He expressed hope that the Bangladeshi authorities would take their responsibilities seriously, properly investigate such incidents and respond to them.

The Indian prime minister also stated his support for a democratic, stable, peaceful, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh. According to India’s foreign ministry, Modi called for avoiding rhetoric that negatively affects the atmosphere.

Hasina extradition request

Yunus’s spokesperson Shafiqul Alam said that the Bangladeshi leader raised the issue of alleged human rights violations during Hasina’s government. According to him, Yunus urged India to respond to Bangladesh’s request for the extradition of the former prime minister for trial in the country.

Yunus also asked the Indian government to take measures to ensure that Hasina does not make what he described as false and provocative statements while in India. In addition, he raised the issue of alleged killings at the border, in which Indian security forces are allegedly involved, according to him, and expressed hope that they would stop.

Yunus’s office said that Bangladesh highly values its ties with India, based on shared history. During the meeting, he recalled India’s support in 1971 and presented Modi with a photograph from an event in Mumbai in 2015, when the Indian prime minister honored him at the Indian Science Congress. Bangladesh is due to host the next BIMSTEC summit.
