Three cities in Russia have been granted permission to use lower-quality hot water until 2032
In Yekaterinburg, Verkhny Pyshma, and Berezovsky, hot water quality standards have been temporarily relaxed. The new standards will remain in effect until the end of 2032.
The permissible iron content has been increased by 40%—from 0.3 to 0.42 mg/L—and the maximum color index for water has been raised by 50%, from 20 to 30 degrees. The decision was made by the management company “T Plus” in agreement with the regional office of Rospotrebnadzor. Officials there stated that these changes do not pose a health risk.
The decision was made following a prolonged water supply crisis in Yekaterinburg that lasted throughout August. Earlier this month, filters at Vodokanal’s Western Filtration Plant malfunctioned, leaving nearly the entire city without hot water for several weeks.
In late August, Rospotrebnadzor deemed the cold water in Yekaterinburg substandard. In four districts of the city, levels of manganese, aluminum, and free residual chlorine were found to be above the norm, along with issues related to odor, turbidity, and color.
