Teen fires near school in Turkey, 11 students injured — Channel NewsAsia

In the Turkish city of Turgutlu in Manisa Province, a teenager opened fire near a high school, injuring 11 students. Two of them are in serious condition. Police detained the minor suspected of carrying out the attack.

Attack near the school

The incident occurred on the morning of September 22, at around 08:00, in Turgutlu near the resort city of Izmir. As Channel NewsAsia reports, police officers and rescue workers, as well as the students’ parents, arrived at the scene.

Turkish Justice Minister Akın Gürlek said that the suspect’s parents and grandfather had also been detained. According to him, investigators are determining how the weapon came into the minor’s possession, how it was stored and controlled, and are also checking claims of possible bullying before the attack.

Turkish media published footage that allegedly shows the attacker with a weapon. NTV reported that it may have been a rifle. Turkey’s Education Ministry said that classes at the school were suspended on the day of the incident.

School security measures

The attack occurred five months after two school shootings in southern Turkey, which raised concerns about the safety of educational institutions. After those incidents, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan promised to tighten control over gun ownership.

A day before the shooting, Education Minister Yusuf Tekin and Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi signed a protocol on security measures for the 2026–2027 academic year. Authorities reported assigning 31,000 staff members to monitor school grounds and maintaining a permanent police presence at institutions classified as high-risk.
