In Armenia, the leader of a pro-Russian party was arrested for two months

A court in Armenia has ruled to impose a two-month pretrial detention order on prominent businessman and leader of the pro-Russian opposition party “Prosperous Armenia,” Hagik Tsarukyan.

Tsarukyan’s industrial and financial group includes large commercial facilities, such as a cognac distillery, a cement plant, and a large sports complex. The “Prosperous Armenia” political party, which he leads, takes a distinctly pro-Russian stance and failed to win seats in the country’s legislature following the June parliamentary elections.

Armenpress reports this, citing data from the Investigative Committee.

The politician was detained in Yerevan on suspicion of fraud the day before, on July 6. As part of this investigation, Armenian law enforcement conducted large-scale searches at the businessman’s private residence, as well as at approximately 70 other addresses linked to his assets.

The Armenian Parliament has finally passed a law restricting the right to vote for citizens who have lived outside the country for an extended period of time.
