Former President Robert Kocharyan and his son Sedrak were detained in Armenia
Former President Robert Kocharyan and his son Sedrak were detained in Armenia. The former president was taken to the country’s National Security Service.
At the same time, early this morning, law enforcement officials searched the home of Kocharyan’s other son, opposition lawmaker Levon Kocharyan.
Armenia’s Anti-Corruption Committee stated that the criminal investigation leading to the detentions is related to corruption.
Robert Kocharyan’s office described the law enforcement actions as yet another attack by the authorities on the former president and his family.
The detentions took place the day after a heated exchange between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Levon Kocharyan in parliament.
During his speech, Pashinyan threatened to strip the Kocharyan family of property that, according to him, had been acquired illegally.
The prime minister stated that this property should not be passed on to the former president’s children and grandchildren but should be returned to the state.
Nikol Pashinyan had previously stated on multiple occasions his intention to return to the state assets that, in his view, were illegally acquired by the Kocharyan family.

At this time, the circumstances surrounding the arrest of Robert Kocharyan and his son Sedrak, as well as the specific allegations in the corruption case, have not been disclosed.
