In Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the Union of Arab Football Associations (UAFA) stated its support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino following a meeting of its executive board. Channel NewsAsia reports.

Support from Arab associations

UAFA, which includes 22 Arab football associations, issued a statement following its 81st executive board meeting. The organization welcomed FIFA's recent efforts to strengthen cooperation with national, regional and continental football bodies.

In its statement, UAFA also expressed support for Infantino, saying that he had strengthened the unity of the global football community. In August, six heads of Arab associations, including those from Qatar and Morocco, which will be one of the co-hosts of the 2030 World Cup, had already announced their support for Infantino.

FIFA president's re-election

Infantino is running for re-election, with the vote due to take place in March. At the same time, he faces growing opposition after being forced in July to abandon an initiative to sell a stake in FIFA tournaments, including the World Cup.

On Tuesday, the Gulf Football Federation, which brings together eight national associations, also expressed support for the incumbent FIFA president. The following day, the Swiss Football Association withdrew its support for his re-election, while UEFA pledged to put forward an alternative candidate by the November deadline. Last week, Infantino proposed that FIFA's 211 member associations conduct an independent review of decision-making processes within the federation.
